Unit Training

The Recruit Basic Training Course is approximately 120 hours over five to six months in duration. The course typically starts in early December and ends in late April. Classes are held one weeknight each week and one to two Saturdays a month. Because of holidays and cancellation of classes due to weather, several weeks may have two weeknight class sessions. Every attempt is made to keep the class dates as announced at the beginning of the course so that recruits may plan ahead.

Subjects are a combination of classroom and hands-on instruction. Classes are taught by Regular Deputies, Reserve Deputies, Law Enforcement Officers of other Police Departments and members of the State's Attorney Office. Cooperation and teamwork are also strongly emphasized and critiqued during the course.

Refresher Training are subjects that require periodic retraining or recertification. It includes changes in laws, rules and regulations, OC Spray recertification, baton recertification, Hazardous Materials First Responder training and other subjects. Not all subjects are repeated every year. However, some may be covered more than once in a calender year.

On Saturday, April 1th, Deputy Chief Dennis Delia welcomed four new members to the Lake County Sheriff Reserve Deputy Unit. The new recruits, pictured below with the training officers and "a few of the tools" used in traffic training. Under the direction of Training Director, Lieutenant Hugh Gallarneau, assisted by three Assistant Training Officers, Lieutenant Steve Solner, Reserve Deputy Dave Kibitlewski, Reserve Deputy Jack Wagner and Reserve Deputy Wendy Massie, these new members received over 130 hours of intensive training in a variety of subjects and are eager to begin serving the citizens of Lake County. Congratulations to all.
